NOVO Construction Receives .49 EMR Rating
Safety at NOVO Construction has always been a top priority. With efforts led by our Safety Director, Thomas Allison, NOVO Construction reported a .49 EMR for 2017 while besting an industry average of 1.0.
“It’s cliché, but safety is everyone going home in the same condition they were in when they showed up for work. Being able to recognize hazards. Not only on the job, but when we are out and about in our daily lives with our families. Always having that awareness of what could happen and then taking the steps to mitigate,” said Allison.
Allison is in his fifth year with NOVO Construction, and the company has seen continued improvement in workplace safety and protocol during his tenure. This is most apparent in receiving our lowest EMR in the company’s history during 2017.
Year | Man Hours Worked | EMR Rating | OSHA Citations |
2018 | — | 0.49 | 0 |
2017 | 526,612 | 0.67 | 0 |
2016 | 541,904 | 0.72 | 0 |
2015 | 598,270 | 0.53 | 0 |
2014 | 542,592 | 0.75 | 0 |
2013 | 444,626 | 0.85 | 0 |
“When creating a culture of safety, you have to have everyone in the organization involved, from the very top all the way down. It’s about open lines of communication.” Allison continued.
NOVO’s safety division has grown over the last year with the addition of Safety Coordinator roles to create more training, oversight, and ultimately safer job sites. Allison has spent 38 years in commercial construction in the Bay Area and feels that technology has helped make jobsites safer across the industry.
“It continues to get better,” he concludes. “The jobs are safer, there is good equipment, and better means and methods to do things that are protecting people. The technology is incredible, it’s going to evolve to places I can’t even dream of.”
